SEGA is on a charm offensive. The legendary Japanese publisher, which has launched some of the best games of 2024, is reviving an array of favourites – including Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, Shinobi, and Streets of Rage.
But you can add Yu Suzuki’s iconic Virtua Fighter to that list, as confirmed in an interview with VGC.
SEGA’s Justin Scarpone told the site: “We have a suite of titles in development right now that fall into that legacy bucket, which we announced last year at The Game Awards: Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, and we have another Virtua Fighter being developed. And so all that’s very exciting. And then in certain instances, we’re also doing animation series, or live-action films to augment that and be part of those roadmaps.”
This is the first time, to our knowledge, Virtua Fighter has been mentioned. It’s obviously not clear which team is working on the franchise, and whether creator Yu Suzuki is involved.
The series, which got its first release in arcades back in 1993, has returned to popular culture more recently, thanks to its inclusion in the Yakuza games and the PS4 port of Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown. But this will likely mark the first all-new entry in the franchise in well over a decade.
What do you want specifically from a new Virtua Fighter? Are you excited by the prospect of the franchise making a comeback? Which other series does SEGA desperately need to revisit? Let us know in the comments section below.

Played a lot of Virtua Fighter 2 back on the Saturn. Lost interest in one-on-one fighters since then though. It was a very good one though, probably my favourite until Soulcalibur on Dreamcast.
@NEStalgia I swear I predicted the future in that other thread. Remarkable.
Looking forward to this!
Good news for VF that a new game is in development. Sega has been on a roll as of late. More 3D fighters beside Tekken is a good thing.
Played a lot of fighters when I was younger. Last one I bought was street fighter 5.
I would love a new legend of Thor, Sega rally, Outrun and Die hard arcade or whatever it was called.
I hope it’s a proper entry with a lot of single player content like SF6 or MK1. Fingers crossed!
VF5 Final Showdown was the game I met most of my current PSN friends on back on PS3 so we are all obviously very excited about the prospect of a new one. Looking forward to seeing it fully revealed!
Is that screenshot from the PS5 Pro enhanced version?
This unlocked a core memory. I remember a summer holiday in 1994 to a Spanish town named Tossa, and during that trip, an 11yr old me put nearly £40 my grandad had given me in to a Virtua Fighter arcade machine. The subsequent bollocking from my family was unforgettable. Thinking back, that towns name was an apt description of me.
Grew up with Sega, loved VF2 on my Saturn, though Sega Rally is the one that I want to see back... but I think Nintendo is just about the only games company that still delivers. Bethesda, BioWare, Sega etc, are the same companies in name only. The Sega AM2 that I loved growing up is long gone
I've played so much Virtua Fighter thanks to the Yakuza/Like a Dragon games.
Please don't mess this up Sega!
VF 5: US is great but the bad netcode pretty much killed the game. If the new VF has solid netcode with rollback + cross play, there's a chance the game will have long life.
We definitely need another 3d fighter especially since Tekken 8 isn’t really that good.
YES!!
About time!
The best part of this is that i found out they are making an Eternal Champions movie and maybe a game in the future? More exciting to me than Virtua fighter.
@Intr1n5ic I bet that flew over a few heads 😂
@Markatron84 No it's PS6 fidelity mode, leak document said the future is now!
@somnambulance LOL! It's insane, we've actually lived long enough to see Sega return. At this point they should announce a console again lol
@NEStalgia With how quickly they churn out games, if they made Yakuza, Sonic, and Atlus games exclusive (among their other franchise), a lot of the most vocal console critics would be dropping their PlayStations and Xboxes for a new Sega console for sure.
@Markatron84
Nah, that's from the Standard PS5 - the PS5 Pro version will melt your eyeballs and make you change religion!
Yes! One of my favorite series of all time!!
@NEStalgia @somnambulance
Sega has such a great history, so much phenomenal ip, arcade and console hardware.
Think a new console, if they ever took the plunge again, would be a success.
Would be great to see them back, would be a breath of fresh air to the console space.
@GeeForce but will it literally figuratively melt my face off?
@Markatron84
Depends how close you get to the screen! 😶
Edit: literally...
This is what Sony need to do. They have so many unused IPs. Bring them back for new audiences as well as old
THANK HYLIA! Just give me a date SEGA.
Really enjoyed 5 on PS3 back in the day great game also got to enjoy playing as my favourite character from the series in DOA 5 (Pai). Really looking forward to this ^__^
@colonelkilgore Always regret selling my DC. Even until a few years ago I’d pop on for a few rounds with Mitsurugi or Cervantes 😎
@Bob_Salat yeah I don’t even know what I did with mine tbh… I mean I must’ve sold it but have absolutely no recollection of it. Such a great console!
Very happy to hear this! Loved it back in my Saturn days!!
Now if they could just announce a Fighters Megamix remake (where else could you fight Akira as the Hornet from Daytona USA!!)
About darn time. Hopefully its not a live-service as some few rumors have suggested.
I still regularly play Virtua Fighter 2 and 4, as for what I'd like to see them do for a new entry, how about something along the lines of Fighters Megamix? Have the core Virtua Fighter experience but supplemented by some external Sega characters, both sensible such as Kiryu and bonkers like a Daytona car
@Intr1n5ic
The good times. When I was twelve, I went tot London with my school. The family gave my some money and I spend it all at Sega world.
@BolkaRover One for the UK crowd 😄
@Blauwe_Chimay I remember it fondly. The Trocadero was a great place to visit as a kid.
Absolutely delighted to hear this news. The Virtua Fighter series has always been a favourite for mine. Prefer VF any day to Tekken, DOA etc.
@GeeForce Sega right now would rival Nintendo more than when they did rival them. With the way their games sell, I almost think people might want what they’re selling more than current Sony and Microsoft.
VF2 is my most played arcade game, played the arse out of VF4 Evo on PS2, VF5 was the first game I bought for my PS3 (a week before I even had the console!).
@somnambulance Bro could you imagine? You give me the kind of crazy and inventive games that were coming out for their consoles in the 90s I'd buy a new Sega in a heartbeat!
It’s been a long time coming and heavily hinted at and I am so happy about it!
@somnambulance it's funny how you wrote that because it made me remember a comment from this site saying that Persona 3 would be the game that makes the most money from February 2024, the reason was because the low costs of making it vs sales, obviously the user was writing that thinking about FF7R2.
And then Helldivers 2 happened ... lol
We sure need more 3d fighting games. This is really cool.
@somnambulance I want to see it being just because the sheer redemption arc would be golden. Though I think like Microsoft Sega has figured out that consoles aren't where the money is anymore.
i always wanted a full virtua fighter vs dead or alive fighting game i doubt it will ever happen but it would still be cool.
@Markatron84
And back in the day we really thought games couldn't look any better than that
Would love to see Sega Rally, Nights into
Dreams, Daytona, Outrun series and Virtua Cop games again!!
Fair but I wish they did Sega GT/Rally with no licenses I'd take even. If Bugbear can with Wreckfest/Flatout series why not.
I have at least 1-3+ IPs from every western/eastern publisher I'd want to return. Konami GTI Club, Coded Arms, Enthusia, Love Plus.
Namco Ridge Racer, Splatterhouse, or some others forgetting.
Activision with Pitfall put the metroidvania entry on Back Compat, make a Indy/Uncharted/TR competitor with it, even Tad or Jo Wander or others exist in the cartoony explorer game space. Could say Supercar Street Challenge or Blur as well but that won't happen. Singularity/Time Shift as well.
Or other IPs they also ignore. Capcom should make Under the Skin a multiplayer game that didn't do well I think that could be a hit to remaster/port, they want people to care about the RE3 content in it due to the remake, disguises with perks that are fun to play for people to stream the game because it's easily replayable. That's what this gen could use but they won't and make another garbage live service game when they have the basis of a great old PS2 game they could salvage and expand on but NOPE make generic ones instead. Their other IPs are fine but eh I'm on and off of caring about them.
I'd take PN03 or Auto Modellista/Group S Challenge, Lost Planet as well.
I could go on for a while but won't.
I tried it in Yakuza, never really liked it.
All those talks better be real. You made the hype Sega, now all you need to do is deliver them to us.
How about 2 games. A virtua fighter compilation with 1-5, and an all new entry in the series.
I know id be day 1 on both.
